Benefits of a Blepharoplasty

Signs of aging often appear most noticeably in the eye area. This thin, flexible skin loses collagen over time, and fat bulges can begin to show through. Blepharoplasty improves the appearance of the eyes by lifting and tightening the eyelids. It provides a range of benefits, including a more youthful appearance and increased confidence.

What is Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to enhance the aesthetics of the eyelids. This procedure achieves a naturally youthful appearance while tightening the eye area. It can also create a sense of symmetry in facial features, correct sagging upper lids, or treat undereye bags and puffiness.

Dr. Sonneveld may recommend an upper or lower blepharoplasty, depending on your needs. Many people have their upper and lower eyelids treated with a double blepharoplasty. Eyelid surgery continues to grow in popularity as more people discover the benefits of this relatively minor procedure.

Benefits of a Blepharoplasty

The benefits of blepharoplasty extend beyond just aesthetic improvement. This procedure can also provide functional benefits. Research has demonstrated that upper eyelid surgery can improve vision, headaches, and eye strain. The procedure can remove excess skin blocking your vision or relieve excess eyelid tissue causing eye strain.

Blepharoplasty can help you look more alert, refreshed, and youthful. This can positively impact your self-confidence and overall quality of life. Benefits in the upper eyelid area include smoother, more lifted lids and more visible eyes. In the undereye area, you can see a reduction in puffiness and bags and a better definition of the lower eyelid.

How Does Blepharoplasty Work?

Dr. Sonneveld often performs blepharoplasty with local anesthesia. You will not feel any discomfort. The procedure uses small incisions hidden in the creases of your eyelids to access the area. Excess skin, fat, and other tissue are removed or tightened to smooth and firm the eyelids.

Eyelid surgery typically takes one to two hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. Dr. Sonneveld, an experienced maxillofacial surgeon, considers each individual’s facial anatomy to create a natural, balanced appearance. Eyes look restored and rejuvenated, leaving others to wonder how you always look so well-rested and alert.

What is Recovery Like After Eyelid Surgery?

You can expect minor bruising and swelling for the first few days after your procedure. These normally fade within a week. Avoid rubbing your eyes or disturbing your incisions while they heal. Sleeping with your head elevated will decrease swelling and keep you more comfortable. You should also wear sunglasses and a hat that shades your eyes for several weeks after surgery. Sun exposure can cause changes to your healing skin.

Am I a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Most adults with healthy eyes make good candidates for blepharoplasty. Candidates range widely in age, including some younger people wanting to treat their inherited undereye bags or droopy eyes. Older individuals wanting to address signs of aging make excellent candidates since blepharoplasty is the only effective way to correct significant drooping and loose skin.

Dr. Sonneveld and his staff provide excellent care and service. If you have any apprehension at all, this is the practice to come to. They are extremely patient, loving and kind, and explain everything to you if they have to. I love them.
