Dos and Don’ts While Healing After Bone Grafting
While bone grafting prepares your jaw to support a dental implant by rebuilding areas where bone volume has diminished, the procedure itself is just the beginning.
How well you care for the surgical site in the weeks that follow plays a major role in whether the graft integrates successfully and whether your implant journey stays on track. Follow these guidelines to give yourself the best possible outcome.
Do: Follow Your Post-Operative Instructions Closely
Your surgeon provides specific instructions tailored to your procedure, and those instructions take priority over any general advice. Take prescribed medications on schedule, attend all follow-up appointments, and reach out to our team at Sonneveld Oral & Facial Surgery if anything feels off.
Bone grafting creates the foundation for your implant, and protecting that foundation starts with following your care plan to the letter.

Do: Manage Swelling Proactively
Some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the days after surgery are completely normal. Apply an ice pack to the outside of your jaw in 20-minute intervals during the first 24 to 48 hours to keep swelling under control.
After the first two days, switch to warm compresses if tenderness lingers. Keeping your head elevated, even while sleeping, also helps reduce swelling during the early recovery period.
Do: Eat Soft Foods and Stay Hydrated
Your diet during recovery directly affects the healing process. Stick to soft, nutritious foods that require minimal chewing:
- Smoothies, yogurt, and protein shakes
- Mashed potatoes, soft-cooked eggs, and oatmeal
- Soups and broths (warm, not hot)
- Soft fruits like bananas and avocado
Staying well-hydrated supports tissue healing, but skip the straws. Suction pressure can disturb the graft site and compromise your results.
Do: Keep the Area Clean
Gently rinsing with warm salt water after meals helps clear bacteria from the surgical area without irritating healing tissue. Brush carefully around the graft site using a soft-bristled toothbrush, and avoid direct contact with the area until your surgeon clears you to do so.
Good oral hygiene during recovery lowers your risk of infection and supports successful graft integration.
Don’t: Smoke or Use Tobacco
Smoking after bone grafting significantly increases the risk of graft failure. Tobacco restricts blood flow to healing tissue, slows the integration process, and raises the likelihood of infection.
If you smoke, your surgeon will ask you to stop before and after the procedure. Following through on that commitment protects both the graft and your future implant.

Don’t: Push Through Physical Activity
Strenuous exercise raises blood pressure and heart rate in ways that can increase bleeding and disrupt the graft site. Plan to rest for at least the first few days, and ease back into physical activity gradually. Your surgeon will let you know when it’s safe to return to your normal routine.
Don’t: Eat Hard, Crunchy, or Sticky Foods
Chewing pressure on or near the graft site can shift the material before it has a chance to integrate with your natural bone. Avoid:
- Hard foods like chips, nuts, and raw vegetables
- Sticky foods like caramel or chewing gum
- Crunchy foods that require forceful biting
Stay with soft options longer than feels necessary. Rushing this part of recovery isn’t worth the risk.
Don’t: Miss Your Follow-Up Appointments
Bone graft integration takes time, typically several months before your jaw is ready to receive an implant. Your follow-up visits allow our team to monitor healing, catch any concerns early, and confirm when you’re ready to move forward with the next phase of your treatment.
At Sonneveld Oral & Facial Surgery, bone grafting and dental implants go hand in hand. We guide you through every stage of the process so that when it’s time to place your implant, your jaw is fully prepared to support it for the long term.
