How Does Blepharoplasty Work?

For many of us, signs of aging rob the brightness of our eyes. Skin laxity can lead to droopy eyelids, wrinkles, and under-eye bags. Blepharoplasty offers long-lasting rejuvenation for your eyes to restore a more youthful and alert appearance.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure used to improve the appearance of the eyelids. This procedure involves removing and tightening excess skin, muscle, and fat from the upper or lower eyelids, resulting in a more youthful and refreshed look.

Eyelid surgery is often performed for cosmetic purposes, such as to improve the appearance of sagging, wrinkly eyelids. Drooping eyelids can also obstruct your sight, so blepharoplasty may be performed for functional purposes to improve your field of vision. You may have upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both for comprehensive results.

How Does an Eyelid Lift Work?

Blepharoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia or IV sedation. Dr. Sonneveld will make small incisions along the eyelids’ natural creases or inside the lower lid, allowing him to remove excess tissue and fat, repair muscles, and tighten the skin. The incisions are then closed with sutures.

Dr. Sonneveld will tailor the procedure to your unique anatomy and desired outcome. For example, some individuals may require a more extensive procedure that involves the removal of muscle and fat from the lower eyelids, while others may only require a simple removal of excess skin from the upper eyelids. Some patients may also have their blepharoplasty paired with another procedure, such as a brow lift or facelift.

How Long is Recovery After Blepharoplasty?

Recovery time after eyelid surgery varies from person to person and can range from a few days to several weeks. Immediately following the surgery, it’s normal to experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising. Cold compresses can help alleviate swelling and bruising.

Most patients can return to work and normal activities within a week or two after the surgery. We’ll provide detailed aftercare instructions and answer any questions you have.

Blepharoplasty Results

Though you might see immediate improvements, the outcome of your eyelid lift may be obscured by swelling and bruising at first. As the swelling fades, you can expect your eye area to look younger, smoother, and rejuvenated. Your field of vision may also be improved. The results of blepharoplasty typically last a decade or more.

Am I a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Good candidates for eyelid surgery are individuals who are in good overall health and have realistic expectations for the procedure. If you have excess skin or fat around the eyes, causing a tired or aged appearance, or functional issues such as obstructed vision due to sagging upper eyelids, blepharoplasty may be an effective solution.

The staff at Faces were very friendly. I went in for what I thought would be a very painful procedure, the staff had me laughing even though my mouth was full. You can tell they are passionate about their profession. I hate dental work so the fact that I took the time to write this should tell you something. 10 out of 10. Thank y’all for being awesome.
