How Long Does a Facelift Take?

Lines, wrinkles, and loose skin can make you look older than you feel. With a facelift, you can see your facial skin and underlying structures lifted and rejuvenated. While some treatments can temporarily improve skin laxity, a facelift removes excess skin for long-lasting lift and smoothness.

What is a Facelift?

Age-related loss of collagen and elastin causes the facial skin to sag. Fat also shifts downward, leaving the cheeks looking hollow and the lower face heavier. A facelift is a surgical procedure that lifts the skin and underlying layers back to a more youthful position. Removing excess skin removes lines, wrinkles, and sagging. A facelift and neck lift can combine to produce a tighter, more defined neck and jaw to match your newly contoured facial features.

How Does a Facelift Work?

Dr. Sonneveld considers each facelift a unique procedure and will design your surgical plan based on your needs. Some people may need a less invasive procedure than others, while some may want a neck lift or other procedures like a brow lift added to their surgery. Dr. Sonneveld uses incisions hidden in the hairline and around the ear to lift and remove loose skin. Due to his extensive knowledge of facial structures, he will achieve a result that looks natural and refreshed.

How Long Does a Facelift Take?

Your surgeon can perform a facelift under general anesthesia or IV sedation with local anesthesia. The procedure takes between two and five hours. After surgery, you will rest in the recovery area until your release. You will need someone to drive you home afterward.

What are the Benefits of a Facelift?

A facelift can provide a dramatic but natural-looking change to the entire mid to lower face. Some areas of concern where people see improvement include:

  • Folds of skin between the mouth and nose
  • Poorly defined jawline with loose skin
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • A double chin due to sagging fat
  • Sagging neck skin

After a facelift, you will look younger and more refreshed. Many people feel that they look ten years younger or even more. If you have concerns about the upper part of your face, discuss this with Dr. Sonneveld. A brow or eyelid lift may help you achieve the all-over facial rejuvenation you want to see.

What is Recovery Like From a Facelift?

For the first few days after surgery, you will have a compression garment to wear around the face and neck. This protects your results and helps the skin heal in its new lifted position. You will have specific instructions on when to wash your face and how to minimize bruising and swelling.

Dr. Sonneveld will see you for follow-up visits to assess your healing progress. Soreness and bruising will resolve within a few weeks. Most people can go back to work within ten days. You will need to avoid any strenuous activities until your surgeon approves them.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

Ideal candidates for a facelift have moderate to severe skin sagging and want to correct it. You should maintain good overall health and not use any nicotine-containing products. Dr. Sonneveld will assess your skin condition and other factors before deciding whether a facelift is appropriate for you.

The whole staff and doctors were very professional and I never had to wait when I arrived for my appointments.
