How Do I Prepare for Oral Surgery?

Oral surgery requires similar preparation to any surgical procedure.

Understand Your Procedure

During your consultation with Dr. Sonneveld, we recommend you ask questions about why the procedure is being performed and what to expect from your appointment. Our open conversation policy helps you stay informed about your medical treatments and can help quell anxiety.

Find a Ride

Sedation and anesthesia can impair judgment and slow reaction time. If you have outpatient surgery, we recommend a friend or family member drive you home and help with your care for at least 24 hours.

Do an Overnight Fast

For your safety, we recommend you do not eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight. In rare cases, aspiration can cause your stomach contents to enter your lungs. An empty stomach allows our surgeons to handle complications such as aspiration effectively.

Bare Your Arms

Some oral procedures may require IV sedation or a pressure cuff to monitor your vitals during surgery. We recommend wearing short sleeves to allow for easy monitoring and sedation.

Give Yourself Plenty of Time

Arriving early to your appointment allows you to fill out last-minute paperwork and relax before surgery. A helpful member of our team will check you in, and during this time, you can ask any remaining questions you may have.
