What are Dermal Fillers and How Do They Work?

Dermal fillers are a versatile injectable treatment that adds volume to different areas of the face. Dermal fillers come in a range of formulas that can address different concerns. All facial fillers are FDA-approved and use materials that do not react in the body. We offer three types of fillers:

Juvederm®

The Juvederm® family of fillers uses hyaluronic acid to add facial volume. This material is found in your skin, adding hydration and plumpness. Juvederm® injectables can treat areas including the cheeks, chin, and lips. They can also treat fine lines and wrinkles, including nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

Restylane®

This family of fillers also works using hyaluronic acid. Restylane® works much like Juvederm® but may work better for some applications. It also excels in areas like lines, wrinkles, cheeks, and lips. This variety lets us choose the best formula for your needs.

Radiesse®

Radiesse® is a different kind of dermal filler that uses calcium hydroxyapatite. This material is suspended in a gel and injected into moderate to severe lines or wrinkles. It also works in other areas that need added volume. It boosts volume by triggering new collagen production.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

Each dermal filler has a different lifespan. Most hyaluronic acid fillers last one to two years. Fillers used in the lips have a smoother, more flexible formula, and they usually last about a year, while those used in the cheeks can last up to two years. Radiesse® creates new collagen that can last two years or more. All facial fillers require occasional touch-ups to maintain your fuller, smoother look.

Is There Any Downtime With Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers do not require any downtime. You can return to your daily routine immediately. Redness and swelling may occur but usually fade within an hour or two. Avoiding alcohol and NSAIDS like ibuprofen before and after treatment helps prevent bruising. The convenience of dermal fillers makes them an extremely popular aesthetic treatment.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dermal Fillers?

FDA-approved dermal fillers are safe for almost anyone. Good candidates are generally healthy and have reasonable expectations. Candidates may want to treat a wide range of aesthetic concerns. You should not have any injectables if you have an infection or skin condition in the treatment area.

Dr. Sonneveld and his staff provide excellent care and service. If you have any apprehension at all, this is the practice to come to. They are extremely patient, loving and kind, and explain everything to you if they have to. I love them.
