What is a Dental Implant?
Dental implants have revolutionized the way dental practitioners treat missing or damaged teeth. A dental implant is a small, titanium screw-like structure that serves as a replacement for the root of a missing tooth, allowing you to regain your brightest smile.
What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically inserted into the jawbone to support a replacement tooth or bridge. The implants are made of titanium, a biocompatible material commonly used in medical implants because it can fuse with bone tissue.
The implant is placed in the jawbone and left to heal for a few months while it fuses with the bone tissue, a process called osseointegration. Once the implant has bonded with the jawbone, an abutment is attached to the implant, which then supports the artificial tooth or bridge.

How is Dental Implant Surgery Done?
The entire process of placing the dental implant, letting it heal, and attaching the abutment and crown can take several months to complete and is done in several stages. The first stage is the placement of the implant in the jawbone. This oral surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia and takes one to two hours.
Dr. Sonneveld will make a small incision in the gum tissue to access the bone, then drill a hole in the bone to insert the implant. A temporary denture is then placed over the gum to protect the area.
After the implant has been placed, the healing process begins, during which the implant fuses with the jawbone. This process is called osseointegration and can take several months. Once the implant has fully integrated with the jawbone, Dr. Sonneveld will attach an abutment to the implant. Finally, he will attach the permanent artificial tooth or bridge to the abutment, completing the dental implant procedure.
What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
Dental implants have several benefits, making them a popular choice for people needing to replace missing or damaged teeth. They are custom-designed to match the color, shape, and size of the surrounding teeth, making them indistinguishable from natural teeth.
The benefits of dental implants include:
- Look and function like natural teeth
- Offer a long-term solution for missing teeth
- Improve appearance and functionality
- Help prevent bone loss in the jaw

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Dental implants are suitable for most people with damaged or missing teeth. However, not everyone is a candidate for dental implant surgery. Candidates for dental implants must have healthy gums and sufficient bone density in the jaw to support the implant. If the jawbone is too thin or has receded, a bone graft may be necessary before placing the implant.
Additionally, patients with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, may not be eligible for dental implant surgery. Dr. Sonneveld will help you determine if dental implants are right for you during a detailed consultation.
