What is Rhinoplasty?
When you look in the mirror, is your nose the first thing you see? An overly large or misshapen nose can distract from your other features and disrupt your facial harmony. That makes rhinoplasty, or a “nose job,” popular for its ability to reshape your nose.
What is Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)?
Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that alters the size and shape of the nose. Cosmetic rhinoplasty enhances the appearance of the nose and face, while functional rhinoplasty is carried out to improve nasal function and breathing. Commonly called a “nose job,” this procedure involves removing and reshaping cartilage and tissue to achieve the desired shape.

What Does Rhinoplasty Treat?
People have nose surgery for various reasons, including repairing their nose after an injury, addressing breathing difficulties or congenital deformities, or simply because they are dissatisfied with how their nose looks. Rhinoplasty can correct a nose that is:
- Too large or bulbous
- Overly arched or hooked
- Asymmetric or uneven
- Crooked or misshapen
- Upturned
- Droopy at the tip
- Too wide (flared nostrils)
How Does Rhinoplasty Work?
Your first step will be a consultation at Faces Fort Worth. Dr. Sonneveld will examine your nose and discuss your goals. He may also take images of your nose from various angles and request additional testing, such as a CT scan.
Dr. Sonneveld performs rhinoplasty with general or local anesthesia, and you can go home the same day in most cases. He will make incisions inside the nostrils for closed rhinoplasty, while open rhinoplasty requires an incision across the columella between the nostrils. Dr. Sonneveld then sculpts and reshapes the bone and cartilage before closing the incisions.

What to Expect After Rhinoplasty
Your nose will be bandaged and splinted for a week or two after your procedure. Dr. Sonneveld will give you detailed instructions on what to do during recovery, how to manage any discomfort, and when to schedule follow-up appointments. Most patients return to work within two weeks. During this time, you should expect swelling and bruising.
The results of your rhinoplasty will appear gradually as the swelling fades. You can enjoy the improved appearance of your nose approximately three months after the surgery. The final results are visible in a year or so, and these results are typically permanent.
Am I a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?
Most people who want to improve the appearance or function of their noses are good candidates for rhinoplasty. If you have a deviated septum, nose injury, or other problem that affects your breathing, rhinoplasty may be necessary to repair your nose. If you’re interested in rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons, your nose should be fully developed. This happens around age 16. Ideal candidates should be overall healthy non-smokers with realistic expectations.
