Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic implants are the ‘rescue implants’ for severe upper jawbone loss and have been told that they may not be a good candidate for traditional dental implants.

Learn More About Zygomatic Implants

The cheekbone or the zygoma is a thick and solid bone near the sinus. During a zygomatic implant, long screws are implanted into the zygoma. Depending on the extent of atrophy in the upper jaw, two to four zygomatic implants are ‘buried’ into the zygoma. Often, the anterior implant site, or the front part of the jaw, is prepared to insert regular implants for an overall successful outcome. After the procedure, a provisional restoration is used for the next 4 to 6 months, during which the osteointegration happens.

It takes about four months for complete recovery from the zygomatic surgery, after which the final restoration is applied to finish the procedure.

The procedure is usually done under regional anesthesia with conscious sedation. We use a comprehensive 3D system and CT or CBCT scans for accurate and customizable zygomatic implant treatment.

Zygomatic implants have several benefits for patients who may otherwise not have a solution to restoring their smile and functions or the upper teeth. These include:

  • It is a viable and less invasive alternative to bone grafting and sinus augmentation procedures that require patients to wait over six months for healing and complete restoration.
  • It allows immediate loading of prosthetics, so patients do not have to be conscious or uncomfortable during the recovery period.
  • Patients with severely resorbed maxillae (upper jawbone) can return to a normal quality of life as their upper teeth function and aesthetics are restored.

The complexity of the procedure and critical adjacent anatomical structures of the face require meticulous planning for the procedure and a surgeon who has considerable training in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
