How Painful is Tooth Extraction?

If a dental expert tells you you need tooth removal, you may feel anxious. Fortunately, tooth extraction is one of the most common dental procedures. It can usually be performed quickly and with little to no discomfort. Your Faces Fort Worth team specializes in making your experience as painless and stress-free as possible.

What is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction or tooth removal is a very common dental procedure. The most familiar type of extraction is wisdom teeth removal. Wisdom teeth often need to be removed because they do not have room to emerge properly or start to crowd other teeth. Teeth are extracted for many reasons, but in almost all cases, removing the problem tooth will prevent pain or more serious issues in the future.

How Painful is Tooth Extraction?

Managing your comfort during procedures is of the highest priority for us. We offer a range of options to ensure you feel comfortable throughout your tooth extraction. The most common type of pain management is numbing medication injected into the area. This will cause the entire area to feel numb during the extraction. You may feel your oral surgeon working but will not experience any pain.

Some individuals may benefit from a different level of sedation or anxiety control. We offer sedation and general anesthesia for those who require it. No one should ever avoid a needed procedure due to concerns about pain. We will keep you comfortable and relaxed during treatment, and your extraction may be over quickly enough to surprise you.

Why Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?

You may need a tooth removal for many reasons. Many people experience tooth extraction when they have their wisdom teeth removed. A tooth may require extraction if:

  • The tooth is damaged or injured
  • The jaw cannot support the tooth
  • Your teeth are extremely crowded
  • Baby teeth do not fall out when they should
  • Teeth are impacted (trapped in the jaw)
  • The tooth prevents you from cleaning your teeth properly

While you may worry about the effects of tooth removal on your smile and ability to eat, you have several options to replace your teeth. Partial dentures are an option, and you may also consider dental implants

What is Recovery Like After a Tooth Extraction?

Recovery after most tooth extractions usually takes less than a week. You may have soreness and swelling in the area for the first 24 to 48 hours. Over-the-counter pain medications will manage any discomfort. You will be limited to liquids and very soft foods for the first two days. You can gradually add other foods back as you feel comfortable. Most people can eat normally and have minimal discomfort within a week.

Dr. Sonneveld was great. He made sure all of my questions were answered and that I was at ease for my wisdom teeth removal. The experience was so much better than I expected. I had no pain or problems after the removal, I would definitely recommend him to everyone.
