Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)

Platelets from the blood plasma contain a high concentration of essential growth factors that stimulate cell migration and proliferation, thus supporting wound healing. This property of platelets was used in the first generation of plasma concentrate from autologous (or one’s own) blood, where platelet-rich plasma or PRP was introduced to expedite healing. The second generation of plasma concentrate uses platelet-rich fibrin or PRF that is less cumbersome to extract and has a very low risk of contamination.

Platelet Rich Fibrin Fort Worth & Arlington

Fibrin is a fibrous mesh formed during the process of blood clotting to impede the flow of blood. It contains high concentrations of essential growth factors, platelets, lymphocytes, monocytes, stem cells, and granulocytes that connect with the tissue and help with faster bone and soft tissue regeneration.

To get PRF for your treatment, about 10 ml of venous blood is taken, added to sterile glass tubes, and centrifuged for a few minutes. The fibrin clot is formed in the middle layer and placed on the surgical site as a clot.

Platelet-rich fibrin is commonly used in oral and maxillofacial surgery to aid healing. The meshwork of the PRF plays an essential role in accelerating the natural healing process as the scaffolding releases the growth factors and other cells that help with the formation of new blood vessels and tissues.

Since it is made from the person’s own blood, PRF does not lead to any immunological reactions. Instead, it reduces the risk of infection and protects the surgical site from saliva and bacteria. This is especially important as the bone has relatively much less of its own blood compared to other body tissues.

Platelet-rich fibrin is often used with bone grafting material, either in combination with it or as a membrane over it to assist in bone maturation.

PRF is also used in sinus augmentation procedures to accelerate osteointegration or even as the sole graft material.

PRF is used as a clot after tooth extraction to prevent dry sockets and promote healing.

While patients will heal even without PRF, they can get the end results faster, with fewer risks, and often, with less pain.
