Oral Pathology
The oral mucosa is the mucous membrane or ‘skin’ lining the inside of the mouth including the cheeks and lips. Oral mucosal diseases can cause painful mouth conditions and may have an autoimmune link. This is when the body’s immune system begins to attack its own healthy cells. Certain diseases and medications may also cause oral pathology.
These changes can affect the lips, cheeks, palate, and gum tissues and are not necessarily accompanied by pain. Such patients may also be at risk of oral cancer.
Oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world and early detection is possible by looking out for a common precancerous lesion that is a white patch. Other signs include reddish patches, sores that do not heal easily, a lump in the mouth and difficulty chewing, chronic sore throat, and difficulty swallowing.
We highly recommend that you perform a self-examination for the above symptoms and discuss it with your doctor.
