What is Genioplasty (Chin Surgery)?

A small or receding chin can make your lower face look less defined and out of balance. Genioplasty gives you a strong chin that harmonizes with your features. Chin surgery adds definition and can even improve the appearance of a double chin.

What is Genioplasty (Chin Surgery)?

Genioplasty, also known as chin surgery, enhances the shape of a small or receding chin. You have two options for chin surgery:

Sliding Genioplasty

This procedure can correct a range of concerns related to the position of your jaw. Dr. Sonneveld breaks the jaw bone during a sliding genioplasty, allowing it to slide back or forward. This movement allows him to correct misalignment and move the jaw forward to give you a stronger chin. Sliding genioplasty has a longer recovery time but can correct more types of problems.

Implant Chin Augmentation

This procedure uses a small medical implant to enhance your chin. The implant wraps around the bone, making it look and feel natural. Placing the implant is less invasive than sliding genioplasty. Chin implants are designed to last a lifetime, and most people never need to remove one.

What Should I Expect During Genioplasty?

The details of your procedure will depend on the type of genioplasty you have. Incisions are usually made inside the mouth, leaving no visible scars. These procedures usually take place under general anesthesia. Each procedure is unique, so the length will vary but may be as short as one hour.

How Long is Recovery after Chin Surgery?

You can expect to have some swelling and soreness after your chin surgery. Your team will provide aftercare instructions. Your diet should consist of liquids, then soft foods, for the first few days. Ice packs will help you control swelling and discomfort. You will have a follow-up visit within a day or two for your surgeon to remove your bandage and check your progress.

Most people should take about one week off work to recover from chin surgery. Some people may need more time, especially if they have a high-activity job. You can resume most activities after two to three weeks. If you have sliding genioplasty, you will need to wait several months before resuming some strenuous activities.

Am I a Good Candidate for Genioplasty?

Chin surgery is appropriate for almost anyone with a small, receding, or misaligned chin. Good candidates are in good health and have reasonable expectations. Only a consultation can determine whether you are a good candidate for a chin implant, sliding genioplasty, or both. You may not be a good candidate if you have certain medical conditions.

Dr. Sonneveld and his staff provide excellent care and service. If you have any apprehension at all, this is the practice to come to. They are extremely patient, loving and kind, and explain everything to you if they have to. I love them.
